Province strengthens organic farming

(March 14, 2018)

A comprehensive dialogue on Organic Farming was held at the New PGO Expanded Conference Hall which was participated by members of the peasant sector, government officials, and representatives from the national line agencies in partnership with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) last March 7, 2018.

Board Member Melva Garcia jointly presided the meeting which was convened by Atty. Premolito Plaza, Provincial Administrator and Provincial Agriculture OIC Ruby Ann Lagahit.

According to BM Garcia, ‘the use of organic fertilizer is generally desirable in order to deter the health issues brought by chemicals, and to preserve the nutrients in the soil where the rice, vegetables, legumes and rootcrops thrive.’

She added that ‘LGUs must ensure the efficacy of the organic fertilizers before their acquisition and purchase.’ Just like fake news, BM Garcia said that ‘there is also a fake organic fertilizer based on her personal and true-to-life experience.’

BM Garcia, said that the bogus fertilizer was given her from a confab at PCA.

“I used the organic fertilizer in the hope of fattening my assortment of in-door flowers like bougainvillea sa mosetera, because I was told by the maker that the same was organic. However, I noticed that using the fertilizer was counter-productive. There was no significant effect to my plants,” articulated the insightful policy-maker.

In order to completely, openly and truthfully grasp the complete picture of the rice fields which benefit directly from the organic fertilizer, BM Garcia recommended on-site visit by recipient farmers.

For the entire Caraga, presenters showed exclusive snapshots from Urbiztondo, Claver where verdant rice flourish.

Also discussed were the advantages of organic food to the human body, practical know-how against pests, insects, bugs and rats on top of the best practices involved in organic farming.

To boot, BM Garcia expressed her desire to know exactly how much is the cost of the fertilizer per hectare of riceland.

Few years since, organic agriculture, through the use of vermi compost fertilizer, has been advocated by LGUs all throughout Caraga Region to improve food supply and production of farmers.

Organic agriculture is also in line with the program of the Duterte administration to achieve food sustainability and combat rice shortage in the countryside.

Seminars and meetings were initiated and organized in order to learn and replicate the best practices on how to apply the organic fertilizer, when to use it and why there is a need to utilize the same.

As of this writing, many are convinced that it is opportune for the region to become the largest trader of organic fertilizers to the peasant community and other offices.
