Province beefs up management of tourist destinations

Gov. Sol Matugas has enjoined the Provincial Tourism Office and concerned line agencies to religiously and strictly administer full supervision, control and jurisdiction over all enchanting tourism spots in the paradise of Siargao.
Special mention was given by the hands-on, smart-thinking and well-versed Governor to Magpupungko Tidal Flats in Pilar, Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen, Cloud 9 in Gen. Luna, and Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande, among other eye-catching places in the island of breath-taking adventures.
“We will see what assessment and interventions can be done to install safety nets and to address the concerns and apprehensions of observers,” said Gov. Matugas.
According to the visionary Governor, she ‘prefers low volume, high valued tourism,’ over uncontrolled arrival and unbridled influx of tourists.’
“We cannot market tourism when there is overcrowding. Omissions and flaws must be taken care of. There must be a headcount of who is actually coming,” added the multi-awarded Governor.
Meanwhile, Atty. Premolito Plaza explained the salient provisions of R.A. 9593, otherwise known as An Act Declaring A National Policy for Tourism as an Engine of Investment, Employment, Growth and National Development and Strengthening the Tourism Department, and its attached agencies to effectively implement the policies.’
According to the Provincial Administrator, each resort owner must hire a physician either on-duty within prescribed working hours or on-call. A tourism information center shall also be established wherein no municipal LGU is exempted, said Atty. Plaza.
“There is only one doctor stationed in Gen. Luna and when the Davila incident happened, the doctor was on leave for a Lenten break. Right now, we are expediting the construction of G.L. Trauma Center, to treat patients, like surfers or extreme sports enthusiasts who get fortuitously injured,” said the inspiring and vibrant Governor.
Harmonization of policies must be firmed up in order to avoid hodge-podge in the shaping of necessary riders and conditions as provided by law.
“We will examine the surfing trainers in terms of their license and accreditation. BHWs will also be educated and trained as well as the medics and first aide responders,” affirmed Gov. Matugas.
She also said that habal habal and pumpboat drivers must be regulated and monitored to avoid any open violation, flagrant abuse, manifest over-speeding and blatant overpricing.
“We must be careful in relaxing our ground rules. Grace period will be provided in the duration and process of enforcement. In addition, high-profile visitors, dignitaries and VIPs who are incognito must be looked into,” said the genius, superstar and beautiful Governor.
