Governor re-echoes tourism reforms

(April 26, 2018)

In a strongly worded public remarks, Gov. Sol Matugas reminded everyone during the Monday Morning Sharing on April 23, this year, to keep an eye on the tourism spectacle in the paradise of Siargao.

It should be noted that the visionary Governor has forewarned local government officials that the boom in tourism industry on account of overcrowding triggered by the unbridled influx and uncontrolled arrival of tourists will generate overwhelming problems beyond human imagination.

Particularly cited by Gov. Matugas is the town of Gen. Luna, which is home to the world’s best surfing mecca, Cloud 9.

She attributed the crisis  to the scheduled April 26 shutdown of Boracay operations upon the marching orders of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte.

Around 4 first aid tents were installed and operationalized in Cloud 9 to respond to fortuitous events and inadvertent circumstances, like injuries due to engagement in extreme sports.

Other interventions consisted of the comprehensive training of surf mentors, and positioning of  life guards, medics and police guards to man the fort and secure the premises from any illegal activities and untoward incidents that may arise.

Access to the viewing deck and Cloud 9 tower was also restricted in order to preserve law and order, wherein the municipal government has agreed to impose fifty pesos as entrance fee.

“We need to re-organize the shops and put into action solid mechanisms to put in place safety nets for effective crowd control, maintain cleanliness  by replicating the best practices on solid waste management, and proper sanitation, especially the maintenance public toilets, washrooms and lavatories,” said the action-oriented Governor.

Meanwhile, Gov. Matugas also directed law enforcers to secure the island upon the arrival of the Russian Ambassador as well as the upcoming delegates of the Boy Scout of the Philippines (BSP) led by  Atty. Wendell Avisado and former Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay.

Over 100 VIPs are expected to visit Siargao, out of the more than 1000 guests. Gov. Matugas also enjoined concerned stakeholders and the DTI  to strictly monitor the prices of major commodities in order to address the issue of overpricing in the island.

In light with this development, the well-versed Governor commanded respective offices to set up a Local Price Monitoring Council.

Gov. Matugas also announced the coming of Pres Rodrigo Duterte in the World Surfing Cup which is fast approaching.

During her mass oath taking as RDC Chair in Malacañang together with then Gov. Francisco ‘Lalo’ Matugas, the smart-thinking Governor said that the President cautioned officials and employees against committing graft and corruption.

Citing the Letter of Instruction No. 1 of the martial law regime, Gov. Matugas reminded everyone to adhere to the legal provisions of the Philippine Constitution and other bylaws, as well as circulars and decrees in conformity with the Civil Service rules, policies and regulations.

She also clarified about the tie-up with Southern Philippines Medical Center, a world-class and state-of-the-art health facility in the region which caters free services, operations, consultations, check-ups and surgical procedures

With the best interests of the Muslim community in mind, Gov. Matugas also related about her recent attendance during the convergence hosted by the Southern Phil Devt Authority with former Cong Gerry Salapudinas the chief facilitator. She said that she was the lone Governor present during the historic meeting.

In order to expedite the full-blown implementation of the Cuban Polyclinic System as the pilot center nationwide, Gov. Matugas announced the official launching of the Provincial BHW Academy as well as the Provincial Training Academy this May 15.

In view of the great need for physicians and specialists, Gov. Matugas will also integrate medicine in the scholarships offered by the Eskolaran . Laptops will also be distributed to senior high students in line with innovations respecting online education. Opportunities will also be maximized for the Government Internship Program (GIP) and the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

Championing the advocacy of Open Governance as its pilot center nationwide, and the only province in Mindanao, after Bohol in the Visayas and Albay in Luzon, Gov. Matugas proudly heralded the gains of revolutionary, concrete, drastic, and sweeping bureaucratic reforms that she herself instituted.

In the field of agriculture, Gov. Matugas prioritized bamboo after sending a team of select agriculturists in Antipolo City to undergo intensive training.
