Governor hosts Parents’ Congress
(August 15, 2018)
The Greek philosopher Plato once said: “Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence.” And in the words of basketball legend and NBA superstar Michael Jordan: “My heroes are my parents. I can't see having anyone else as my heroes.”
With these powerful words, Gov. Sol Matugas extended her warmest congratulations to all partakers during the Province-wide Parents’ Congress which took center-stage at the Provincial Convention Center last August 13.
Indeed, it was a beautiful, happy and perfect day that the Lord has specially designed for parents of Surigao del Norte.
Gov. Matugas still recalled the day when her first child Bingo was born and she was very grateful that she became a mother at a relatively young age when she delivered her son to this world.
“Now I feel so blessed to have a son and two daughters, and lots of grandchildren. All of them have their respective families. It gives me a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that they are now successful in their careers.
My eldest is the incumbent congressman of the First District of Surigao del Norte, the gentleman from the House of Representatives, ang Bagtik Moserbisyo ug barkada sa katawhan, ilabi na sa kabatan-onan, ang champion sa Sports Kontra Droga ug Pahugjaw sa Siargao.
When I became a regional director at the Department of Education, I was faced by the challenge of low turnout rate for those achievers among public students and pupils. That is why I moved heaven and earth and all my efforts paid off. Our scorecard improved. Schoolchildren performed well in the achievement tests. Everybody was happy to harvest the gains and fruits of our collaborative endeavors. In fact, we excelled in the national match.
As your hard-working Governor, I pilot and spearhead Education Caravan by distributing backpacks filled with school supplies, health kits and grooming materials to preschoolers. To top it all, I also put into action the scholarship program which was a brainchild of then Gob Lalo, which we know as Eskolaran, for the poor but deserving and top-performing students. We increase the stipend and benefits that our provincial scholars receive. Now, we are proud to see that they have become the best and finest masters in their craft,” she narrated.
Educators par excellence like second mothers handling the classroom work bend over backwards to make things happen.
One perfect recipe to achieve absolute success is parents’ involvement and their active participation in nurturing the children.
“We guide parents on how to teach their kids at home. We facilitate and organize exciting activities that empower parents and energize them to take part in school activities. Their pro-active involvement will spell big difference in the launching of projects and fascinating programs which will help greatly the school.
In fact, we are encouraging the conduct of regular meetings, fora and convergence so that parents can share their thoughts about any events held. It is the same motivation I have in embarking on infrastructure development with the construction of library and speech hubs, classrooms, school-buildings and other state-of-the art facilities and modern facilities to imbibe innovation and harmony as we enrich the curriculum with shared values,” said the well-spoken Governor.
According to the visionary and action-oriented Chief Executive and over-all chairperson of the influential Regional Development Council (RDC), she firmly put her faith to parents so that every child can acquire new learnings in school – even those who have problematic circumstances outside the four corners of the classroom.
“But as I saw in some places, with fully committed parents, learning is not a thing of the past – it’s truly bound to happen.
That’s why government leaders, officials, stakeholders and the likes – need the full support and cooperation of parents.
Clearly, parents can change our lives. You are the greatest influencers of a society devoted to usher in a promising future.
Children – regardless of social and family background– deserve a secure environment conducive to fast learning. We need to alter the course of destiny by unity to institute radical, sweeping and drastic reforms. Progress can only be realized when we perfect the solidarity we need to accomplish.
That is precisely why the “Parent Teacher Association,” or PTA for short is born . We all work on what is best for our children because we are fully concerned of their welfare.
Thanks to the PTA’s efforts, Surigaonon children go to schools that are out of harm's way and in safe hands. Thanks to the PTA because we have transformed our schools into best funded model institutions where children discover lots of things.
Today, I believe we’re on the crossover and verge of spectacular changes to public education in this archipelago. We, as a country, are facing some tough issues, looking hard at what really works for us and what does not in our schools. Being stronger than ever before on what students need to get to the top and climb the ladder of success, is what I said earlier, aim high and hit the mark.
We need to encourage feedbacks so we can make sure that the democratic space works for our welfare and happiness.
There is no colorcoding, no politics in the delivery of public service and in making sure that providing quality education is always on top of our priorities.
When you help your kids do their homework or meet with their teachers, you are actually helping them to become productive, peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of this country.
To take you to the school of thought conjured by American billionaire Bill Gates, he said: “Today, our unequal standards mean that every student – even the ones who do everything right, and graduate high school – are at risk of finding out they’re still not ready for college or for a career. And poor and minority students are even more disadvantaged, because in a system left to chance, they are less likely to be called upon to meet meaningful standards – and less likely to be assigned a teacher who can help them do that.”
That’s why we need unfailing standards. We need those criteria and benchmarks to be good enough that parents, teachers, and students can comprehend them better. And we need them to be great enough so that that our children who finish K-12 are fully equipped to reach the zenith of over-all triumph and complete success.
That’s why we are here today.
It’s is for us educators and parents to change the status quo. We need to stand for the advocacies that assist every child to be the best in everything he does. We need to be enthusiastic and passionate in this discourse,” explained the multi-awarded Governor in zest.
