Governor dreams Siargao will become a province
(May 17, 2018)
Gov. Sol Matugas sounds prophetic when she predicted last May 15, 2018 during the 117th Founding Anniversary that the paradise island of Siargao will stand as a province in the years to come.
This after giving heed to the comprehensive narrative of a true-bloodied historian par excellence, Senior Board Member Mamerto Galanida.
“We cannot tell what comes next. We see, Siargao, is emerging as a developed area in Surigao del Norte. Cong Lalo Matugas, the Father of Siargao, is listening, take note. There will come a time when Siargao will declare its own independence,” explained the visionary Governor, who was the first regional director of DepEd Caraga, and the first lady Governor in the meaningful civilization and colorful memory of our beloved province.
According to Gov. Matugas, ‘it is pleasant and sweet to dwell on the rallying point in history
“If we don’t know where we came from, we won’t be clear with what direction we would take. I’m so glad having you here. We should be here,” said the multi-awarded and hands-on Governor.
She added that people converge for three notable reasons, as a reckoning point of our existence, as a political unit of our socio-economic endeavor, and with the end in view of promoting our shared destiny.
“We have our own destiny and joy. At the end of the journey, we come together as one people, as one Surigao. I hope we will not spur divisiveness. For the last seven years, we come together as a family in celebrating One Surigao. Hence, we must reflect on what has happened 117 yrs ago,” said the idealistic and brilliant Governor who champions the trust of her darling constituents.
Meanwhile, BM Galanida narrated about the struggle toward independence advanced by the Gonzales brothers. Simon was appointed by Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo as the Governor-General of Mindanao while his brother Wenceslao sat as Governor of Surigao.
Brig. Gen. Prudencio Garcia sentenced the Gonzales brothers to death, according to Galanida.
Another sibling named Florencio, according to Galanida, fought side by side with Leon Kilat in Cebu during the Spanish Occupation. Thus, a street in Cebu was named after him.
Galanida affirmed that the first flag was raised in Surigao, near the city hall.
He also summoned up the introduction of our education system, through the efforts of the American Thomasites.
“Without a doubt, the first fruit of the labor budged by the Philippine Us Commission was the issuance of Proclamation No. 29 dated May 15 1901 declaring the Province of One Surigao,” asserted Galanida.
Up until this very day, added the eloquent policy-maker, the province has 22 Governors all in all.
“From 1901 up to the Liberation Period, we had 10 Governors, namely - Prudencio Garcia, Daniel Torillo Sison, Rafael Eliot, Pepino Kaimo, Francisco Soriano, Perfecto de los Reyes, Ricaredo Gonzales, Pedro Coleto, Jose Vasques, and Protolico Egay, the grandfather of Vice Gov. Arturo Carlos Egay, Jr.,” declared Galanida.
He also enumerated the names of the predecessors of Gob Lalo, to wit - Vicente Pimentel Sr, Fernando Silvosa, Bernardino Almeda, Constantiono Navarro, Jose Sering, Rolando Geotina, Wencelito Andanar, and Moises Ecleo.
Prior to the inspirational talks and motivational speeches, concelebrated Eucharistic Mass was officiated by Rev.Fr.Toto Tiu, representing Most Rev. Antonieto D. Cabajog, D.D., Bishop, Diocese of Surigao.
There were also Anniversary Flag Raising , Anniversary Program, Groundbreaking of " Bayay
Suriganon" Project, Launching of the Provincial Training Academy and lunch at the PGO Gazeebo.
Present were the officials from Dinagat and Surigao del Sur provinces, delegates from national agencies, expanded Team Capitol family and Provincial Board Members.
