Governor beefs up online education for senior high
(April 18, 2018)
Gov. Sol Matugas has tapped the services of former Tandag City Mayor Beth Ty-Delgado and Dir. Zaid Bin Aslam to boost online education among the senior high school population of Surigao del Norte.
Official debut and staging of the new program set the tone for the indestructible linkage of Marajaw Edukasyon advocacy with information technology which took shape last April 9 at the PGO Expanded Conference Hall.
“We recognize the creamiest of the crop during our recently-concluded Top Students’ Summit. We recognize your efforts. We conduct relentless dialogues and listen to resource persons, as we acknowledge the work of the academe in improving the quality of education here in our beloved province. I firmly believe that the kind of education produces the kind of people you develop,” said Gov. Matugas, in her opening statement.
Meanwhile, Aslam said that ‘online courses will benefit the students in order to hone their potentials and sharpen their expertise in the different areas of specialization.’
“We will install in their gadgets all the modern applications that will help them achieve excellent grades,” stressed Aslam.
Gov. Matugas said that the senior high learners must be fully prepared before they reach college, as they will rise to become future leaders of the country.
“I remember when I was the regional director of DepEd in Region 8, we had this Center for Physics Instruction. I love Physics. Lessons through the web can now be wired and cascaded as part of the online system. We need to teach and inspire students with innovative strategies to learn the craft and master everything. As we modernize the system, we do away with chalk and blackboards,” said the hands-on and visionary Governor.
Former Tandag Mayor Ty-Delgado praised Gov. Matugas for her progressive mindset.
“Education is the best way to move forward. We must be globally-competitive. In so doing, let us prepare our students at an early age. Artificial intelligence dominates robots. Millenials should adopt soft values and catch up with the new trends respecting online courses with discipline, self-reliance and initiative,” she said.
Aslam also explained that the project is intended for public schools.
“We will make sure that there is high connectivity to the internet when wifi problem occurs. Applications to be installed must have specialized codes reserve for all the modules, syllabus, course outlines, assignments, exams, discussion boards, and other items. Accreditation from Deped will guarantee our goal to stamp out job mismatch. The seamless platform depends on the needs of the time,” explained Aslam.
He also expressed his delight upon knowing that the prolific and versatile Governor is fully supportive.
Gov. Matugas also shared her experience in Japan where robots man the operations of some key establishments. She said that buses were operated by robots, and ‘it is nice to offer robotics subject online.’
It should be recalled that Surigao del Norte National High School won the first place nationwide for their invention of robots having firefighting and sms capability. As the official entry of the Philippines to the world in the upcoming global competition to take place in the U.S., robotics has become a cutting-edge field.
“We need to specialize in something. Like me, I sing a lot. It builds confidence. You have to really begin somewhere,” Aslam said.
