GMA keynotes Siargao International Gamefishing

(April 16, 2018)

Former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo expressed her highest regard and appreciation of Siargao paradise as the surfing and gamefishing mecca of the world, during the opening ceremonies of the 11th International Gamefishing Festival in Pilar last April 12, 2018.

Then Gov. Francisco ‘Lalo’ Matugas thanked Arroyo for being instrumental in the concreting of Siargao circumferential roads, improved airport and terminal building, among other giant tourism infra projects during his watch as congressman.

“I remember Martin Tan, the angler who was proclaimed winner in 20018. Thank you so much Cong. Bingo for personally inviting me to witness the international gamefishing here in Siargao. During my time as President of the republic, gamefishing was the newest attraction because the adventure island was already known as the surfing capital of the world,” said Macapagal-Arroyo.

Arroyo said that in 2006, she conceptualized the ‘super regions for the Central Philippines Tourism which includes Siargao.’

“Tourism infra is now thriving. From just one flight a decade ago, now you have 10 flights daily. Congratulations,” said Pres. Arroyo.

Arroyo also said that before, ‘there were only few resorts but now, they number already to over 100.’

“From 400,000 tourists, we are expecting the influx of over a million plus. Gov. Matugas wants low volume, high quality tourist arrival because she is very much concerned of its impact to the environment,” added Pres. Arroyo.

She also said that with the closure of Boracay on April 26, the provincial government must explore new ways of promoting Siargao among big-time Chinese tourists.

“There are more or less 300,000 sightseers from China who do not know about Siargao. We must reach out to them by all means. Otherwise, they will go to Bali or Phuket,” said Arroyo.

Arroyo also revealed that her daughter Luli owned a significant portion of the Alon Resort. Her grandson who stays in Siargao for so long a time embraced her upon landing and take-off.

“Let us always preserve the beauty of Siargao. Take care of the environment. Congratulations to all the Siargaonon officials and leaders for the fruitful rehabilitation of Siargao Airport with the approved feasibility study for its modernization and expansion,” said Arroyo.

Meanwhile, Surigao City Councilor Sim Castrence said that amid the caveat of the Presidential Management Staff not to bother then Pres. Arroyo for any proposed project, erstwhile Mayor Lucio Gonzales asserted his desire to put up a water system.

“Right there and then, the 10 million worth of potable water system proposed by Mayor Gonzales was approved by Pres. Arroyo,” Castrence said.
