Cong Bingo hosts Eco-Bricks workshop

(May 7, 2018)

A two-day Eco Bricks Starter Workshop took center-stage at the heart of Gen. Luna town last May 1 and 2. First Legislative District Cong. Francisco Jose ‘Bingo’ Matugas brilliantly conceptualiuzed and organized the meaningful activity in line with his sincere desire to address the waste problem in the paradise island of Siargao.

“Cong. Bingo Matugas commits to make a bill to ban plastics in his district after the culmination of the 2 days Ecobricks Starter Workshop in Siargao. Thank you for this commitment to end plastic pollution. Thank you from Ecobricks: Plastic Solved, Ecobricks Philippines and Let's Do It Philippines,” revealed Dan Diez, one of the core resource facilitators.

Cong. Matugas  endeavors to mold inspire various groups and sectors of the community in accordance and in consonance with his all-out war against the proliferation of garbage with efforts concentrated on zero plastic waste especially in areas closest to seashore as well as coastal barangays. Accumulated plastic bottles, styro foam, bags, chip wrappers and cellophanes will be stockpiled and brought together and using a very efficient conversion technology, will be transformed into solid bricks.

When waste items and clutters are already tucked and amassed, they will be cut into smaller pieces, crushed, minced, pounded or pulverized when necessary so they turn into bricks for the construction of giant infrastructures like classrooms, school buildings, comfort rooms, lavatories, and other structures.

Cement bricks are eco-friendly, with high insulation value which can absorb the excessive heat from the sun to keep the buildings cool and in the run of things, will effectively curb pollution.

Said important, historic and fruitful event came into being in partnership and collaboration with Lets Do It Siargao Movement and Eco Bricks Phils, under the close supervision of Rosalie Fuentes, Jogen Mil and Dan Diez.

Sun Crew, SEA Movement and GROM Natin, DepEd employees, and participants from various groups joined the action in full force.

It should be recalled that the municipality of Pilar through the people-centered leadership of Mayor Ma. Liza Resurreccion has been the perfect epitome of a no-nonsense leadership after she permanently banned the use of plastic since February of this year.

Simultaneous with the nationwide commemoration of Labor Day was the World Clean Up Day 2018.

Diez, an expert from the Yan and Sotto Architects and Builders and lead convenor of the Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities, and Climate Reality Philippines, said that coastal clean up must be regularly undertaken to preserve the natural beauty and sanitation of our oceans.

Kids stemming across several barangays and points in the breath-taking, majestic and fascinating island of Siargao, also took active part during the Ecobricks Starter Workshop.
Cong. Matugas was delighted upon seeing the children, amid their relatively young age, were so concerned about the environment, wherein every Sunday, they pick up stuffs going with the flow and floating in the salty waters.

Children from Brgy. Pacifico in the municipality of San Isidro also got a heads-up on how to squeeze, compress, mash and pound synthetic objects, remnants and leftovers  into scraps, snippets, bits and pieces to take full advantage of them as eco bricks where the end product is a strong, high-grade cement which is eco-friendly.

It should be noted that such a very sound and laudable zero waste advocacy of the First Congressional District makes the paradise island so lovely and secure against becoming just another Boracay in this part of the universe.
